I have a question. I emailed with a question before and you were helpful. OK, about 2 months ago, I noted raised scales on one of my bantam chicken's legs. She wsn't walking with any pain. I painted her legs initially with vegetable oil. Then I had heard of using kerosene. So, the next week I painted her legs up with half kerosene and half veggie oil. At the same time, we painted the heck out of their roosts and all wood in the coop with 1/3 kerosene and 2/3 veggie oil. The last time we did it was about 2 wks ago and we did all the chickens and her again (of course.) Just yesterday I noticed she is walking very tenderly on her feet and not feeding and scurrying like usual. Could my kerosene treatment be causing her trouble or are those leg mites still not killed? Help!

There are a lot of treatments for Scaley Leg Mites. Some use plain vaseline, others use motor oil, campophenique, Sevin dust mixed into paste with water or vaseline. My favourite is 50/50 Raw Linseed Oil and Kerosene. It has worked well for me in the past but haven't had to use it in many years. I don't know if your use of vegetable oil with kerosence would have harmed the birds. Keorsene burns and I'm not sure if vegetable oil will counteract that. Raw Linseen Oil seems to. Since the bird is showing signs of injury, I would wait a couple of weeks until she is back to normal before going any further. If you think she needs further treatment, there are several listed above that you could try. Good Luck, James

Please help, my chickens are full of small orange bugs that look like lice, the vet suggested bathing them in water & disinfectant (savlon) but this has not workedIhave even tried sprayiong them with a made up solution, as bathing all of them, all the time is not practical. It is unpleasant when I pick them up because then I am full of them too!Thank you bunny

bunny: I think your birds have lice. The best way to treat them is with a dust that contains Sevin (carbaryl) at 5%. There are garden dusts available with Sevin that you can pick up at your local gardening centre. Since lice travel all over the bird you have to get the dust down to the skin on all parts - head, neck, wings, under wings, legs, back, tail and underneath around the vent area. In other words everywhere. Dust once and then 10 days after to break the cycle.
