Since January 2003, animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has asked KFC to make sweeping improvements at its suppliers’ factory farms and slaughterhouses. Now joining PETA in calling for a four-point plan that will dramatically reduce the suffering of millions of chickens are the Humane Society of the United States, Compassion Over Killing, United Poultry Concerns, and Animal Rights International, and others.
Despite the fact that support for more humane treatment of animals is at an all-time high, KFC continues to ignore the public outcry against its cruel and outdated practices. As a direct result of the involvement of organizations and individuals who have decided to boycott the bucket, KFC is being hit where it hurts most—its pocketbook. Revenue at KFC has consistently been down since the start of PETA’s campaign, and the company’s financial situation is dire.
Things are so bad that KFC is not opening new multibranded (joint KFC/Taco Bell or KFC/Pizza Hut) restaurants in the U.S., and KFC’s top growth area is communist China, where protests are not allowed and where, if you do manage to have one, it won’t be covered in the Chinese media.
Some of the humane welfare organizations uniting with PETA include:
KFC Campaign Supporters
The Humane Society of the United States
The Fund for Animals
United Poultry Concerns
Animal Rights International
Compassion Over Killing
Vegan Outreach
Association of Veterinarians for Animal Rights
Animal Welfare Trust
Farm Sanctuary
Animal Place
Sequoia Humane Society
Lake Shore Animal Shelter
Clayton County Humane Society
Marin Humane Society
Assisi Animal Foundation
