Chicken prices have soared up to the government-set ceiling of RM6 per kilo in Malaysia. Selangor and Federal Territory Poultry Traders Association adviser Datuk Dr Lee Chong Meng said this is due to the rise in demand. He also said that poultry farmers and wholesalers were still trying to recover losses experienced during the bird flu outbreak.
“It is simply a case of supply and demand. If there is no demand, then we can’t raise the price anyway,” he said.
Dr Lee said during the avian influenza (bird flu) outbreak, the industry lost about RM50mil per month.
People still don't eat fish because of the tsunami and suspected pollution problems, so the demand of chicken will probably continue.
