New Territories Poultry vice-chairman Hung Yuet-kin said a lack of truck drivers has left the supply of live chickens in Hong Kong low, forcing many residents to buy frozen birds instead of the usual live chicken for Lunar New Year banquets.
"The shortage is not due to the supply but because there are not enough transportation workers to bring them here,'' Hung said.
Chicken is the main dish for the traditional 1st formal dinner on the 2nd day of the Lunar New Year.
The outbreak of avian influenza (bird flu) has also had an impact on the lack of live chickens in the area.
