China has developed a more powerful vaccine against the poultry form of bird flu, a news report said Monday.
Scientists made the new vaccine using a genetically altered bird flu virus. It protects chickens for 10 months (four months longer than existing vaccines) and ducks for 10 months. Geese should be protected for three.
Farms in China, where bird flu is considered endemic, already vaccinate their flocks regularly. When outbreaks occur, the Chinese government kills all poultry within three kilometres of an infected farm and vaccinates all poultry within five kilometres.
