I'm sorry to hear that you've a sick gander. Our duck got ill, and as you, I nursed her better. The epsom salts were about 1 tablespoon per litre of water. She got wonderfully better and there were no worries...for 3 months. Then she got ill again. I am unsure if it was a reoccurance, or she got into whatever it was that made her sick in the first place. We had to put her down last week. A friend of ours who works at a 'chicken' place came by and was kind enough to do it for us. I've never done it and didn't want to cause any undue pain. My only idea had been to use an axe, but our friend offered to do it more humanely. Jem was ready to go. Very tired. Her last day was a good one though. She got a couple bobs in the pool and managed a few tale wiggles afterwards. I didn't see any sign of improvement and she wouldn't eat anymore...so it was for the best. I don't know what to tell you regarding your gander. As I say, Jemma got better and was fine for 3 months. I don't know about the death from heartache either, though I have heard of such things with swans. As a female she may last better than as a male, hormones being what they are. I wish you the best, and hope that he pulls through. It sounds like you are doing all that you can. Keep up the love, and hold your strength. Well wishes and good thoughts.

...that should read 1 tablespoon of epsom salts per litre of water. What can I say, I'm a little tired. Sorry.

I know I wrote out table spoon that time. Will see if splitting up the word made it come out right. Either which way I'm off to bed...so make of these what you will. table spoon tablespoon tbsp (there...that should have done it.) goodnight

Thank you for that clarification. I hadn't realised that kitchen measures were considered bad words...shall have to watch my mouth around children...though I suppose cooking does tend to be a swear word in this day and age of rushing around and fast food, 3 jobs per person and 5 hours sleep. Ug. Anyway...glad to know I'm not going nuts.

So sorry to hear about Jem. But it is so hard to let them suffer. You did the best you could, and she was a trooper. Just wanted you to know that you are not alone in feeling helpless, whan it comes to trying to "doctor" our birds. If they could only "tell'' us. Big hug, and best wishes, Heidi
