Could anyone tell me if I could use garden lime inside the coop under the shavings to keep it fresh smelling and to help break down the manure. I'm just not sure if this is a good practice to start. Thanks for any help here. Best Wishes bbuckbee

I'm not sure which kind of lime you are referring to when you mention "garden" lime, whether it be hydrated lime (calcium hydroxide), quicklime (calcium oxide), or calcium carbonate (ground limestone). If it is either hydrated lime or quicklime, do NOT use it. Both are dangerous. The calcium carbonate, however, is fine to use as it would basically be grit for their crop. I don't think it will give you the results you were looking for though. Hope this helps.

msodooly, thanks for the reply. I was refering to ground limestone and thought it would be a plus for the birds under the bedding. Since nobody seems to practice this for coop cleanliness, maybe I'll hold off on using it for now, just trying to my best for the great birds I have cluck cluck bbuckbee
