Wonder if anyone could answer. i want to introduce wheat to my chicks who are 5 weeks old they are cornish cross and seem to be so hungry all the time. i thought i'd mix 1/4 wheat to 3/4 growers feed. but can i give the wheat kernals to them whole?

Gerry: You can give the wheat kernels whole. Just be sure to give them grit before you begin so it will be in their gizzards before the whole grain gets there. It will be digested better and they will make better use of it. Keep a small hopper with grit in the coop and keep it topped up so they can get it when they need it. I'm not sure if mixing the grain with the grower is a good idea. Birds will usually scatter the crumbles around looking for the grain. It might be better to scatter in the litter or provide a separate feeder for the grain but limit the amount given at any one time or they will fill up on that and throw the nutrient balance off too much.
