Pigs can carry human viruses which, combined with avian viruses like the bird flu, can create new strains with a big potential to infect humans. Health experts around the globe fear the avian influenza, commonly known as the bird flu, could mutate into a form that could easily become a worldwide pandemic.
And their worse fears are starting to come true. Bird flu has infected pigs in Indonesia raising fears of a wider outbreak in the country.
Local scientists tested the animals and reported that pigs in several farms on the main island of Java were infected.
Since 2003, 36 Vietnamese, 12 Thais and four Cambodians have died of the H5N1 strain of avian influenza.

Josh, Please continue with the imformative information, while I'm in no position to say what causes these problems, lets everyone in the backyard poultry farm keep cleanliness the #1 concern on our minds, not only because our birds will be healthy and happy but if you decide to harvest one you will be assured that it is more safe than any market bird
